AI had its "iPhone Moment" This Week...

ChatGPT announced a Plugins feature this week and changed AI forever.

AI Had Its “iPhone Moment” This Week, and your business will be directly impacted.

On January 9th, 2007 - Steve Jobs announces the “iPhone” - no big deal, right?

Hey! It’s Jeremy.

This week, I had a topic and email all ready to go out about a different vertical that I hope you’ll get value from (more on that at the end)...

And then ChatGPT had an iPhone moment on Thursday that I knew I had to let you know about as soon as possible.

Two days ago, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT can now connect to the internet through Plugins (release here).

*Crickets*

I know, I know - not very sexy is it? Well, I have to ask, what were you doing on January 9th, 2007? Did you know that Mr. Jobs’s announcement on that Tuesday changed the world forever?

Let me explain…

Do you remember life before 2007? Of course you do, you were probably happily buying as much real estate as you could from your sweet blackberry (stylus included), sending T9 texts as fast as you could while blasting tunes on your iPod. What a time to be alive! 😁

Specifically, do you remember life before the iPhone? Or, for you Apple-haters out there (I don't judge), before the smart phone?

It's hard to remember sometimes, but I want you to think about it for a second: How has the smart phone changed our lives? YOUR life? Society? Your business?

"Change" is not nearly strong enough, I think you'd agree. "Complete Overhaul" or "Tech-tonic Shift" is more like it.

Well, that's exactly what happened this week with AI. We had an “iPhone Moment” on Thursday that could mark the moment things changed, and I’m not being dramatic.

What are “Plugins”?

Great question, glad you asked.

Plugins are tools that extend the integration and power of something. In this specific case, ChatGPT Plugins are tools that connect it to other tools. In plain, non-AI techy language, Plugins will connect ChatGPT to the rest of the internet.

Yep, now you’re getting it.

It helps to frame this as a comparison to Apple’s iPhone, because we all understand how that has changed our lives and businesses.

Imagine your iPhone with no apps. It just calls and texts. Still useful, right?

But not even close to what it can do with the App Store. When Apple released the app store, they made their platform accessible to the smartest and best builders in the world.

The best digital agencies and developers in the world now had a place to show (and monetize) their work. Now, in this comparison:

IF the iPhone = ChatGPT
THEN the App Store = Plugins

ChatGPT just opened up their platform to best and brightest AI developers in the world. And if you’re a business owner, ChatGPT just opened up their platform to your business and brand.

So What Can It Do?

Again with the great question - you’re on a roll today. Here’s a few things you can now do with ChatGPT Plugins that you could not do before:

  • Do Math

  • Post to Slack

  • Book a Restaurant

  • Buy your Groceries

  • Browse the Internet

  • Book your Travel & Hotels

  • Thousands and thousands and thousands of more things…

You could now use ChatGTP to prompt: “I would like to eat some oysters. Find me the highest rated oyster bar on the East Coast, book my flights and hotel for next Friday. Also, have toilet paper and Pepto Bismol delivered to my house when I get home on Sunday, cause I’m gonna eat way too many of them.”

Ok, that’s a little over the top. But! It IS possible! Wild.

📈 And My Business?

It would be wrong to just think of this as your own personal assistant. Think bigger. Much, much bigger.

Right now, OpenAI has already built out plugin integrations with the following softwares (do you use any of these?):

Expedia, FiscalNote, Instacart, KAYAK, Klarna, Milo, OpenTable, Shopify, Slack, Speak, Wolfram, and Zapier.

Now consider everything you can do with Zapier. That’s just one tool. You can now do that with AI. And here’s the biggest thing - your business will be able to build your OWN plugin to work with ChatGPT.

Here’s a screenshot of those plugins with a quick write-up of what they can do:

You can now leverage the most powerful AI tool’s platform to automate, optimize and fast-track literally every service, product or data that your business provides to customers.

Yep - that’s all I want you to take away from this post. That should trigger an “aha” moment, I hope. That should make you dream for a bit.

🎁 Wrapping Up

Could you run a successful business without a smart phone? Sure you could, hundreds of thousands of businesses did. But after it became available, how much faster could you go with your business, your marketing, your operations, your sales, your everything, by leveraging that new tech?

This is that.

Can you afford to ignore AI developments in your business?

Maybe.

You can probably continue to do well for a while. But one thing is clear…

It’s just a matter of time before other businesses get on this fast-track. I hope you’ll catch it early and I hope we can help you in that endeavor.
